… Well, not so much really, but at their price they’d better be relatively comfy at least. I’ve been looking for a pair of chunky platform boots for a while now. Its pretty hard to find shoes that my tiny little feet can fit into, so I’ve been searching for over a year. I was just about to give up and pay the $200-$300 (whenever I could afford THAT) that a goth store would ask for boots like that when, almost by accident, I found a pair in the style I’d been chasing, in a size that fits me. YAY! My new Red Pepper “Oggle”s cost me AU$110. They’re the most expensive shoes I’ve ever bought (the price of about 3 of any of my other shoes put together would probably add up to the price of those boots). In fact, the only item of clothing I own that cost more than that is the sheepskin suede leather jacket my mum bought me a couple of years ago. But I don’t really care, I’ve finally got a relatively comfy pair of “going out” shoes in a style that I love. Yeah, between that and the new computer it’s been a splurgy kinda month for my.

Just some picture of the stuff I picked up at Supanova. Sorry about the quality. I don’t have a scanner. Also, the gloss finish on some of them didn’t take well to the flash.

Supanova was a lot more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I even caved in and bought a bunch of comics; mainly very early Uncanny X-Men issues (numbering in the teens, twenties and thirties), so they’re in bad condition, but they were verging on affordable at least. Also picked up a few World’s Finest issues. The main reason I went tho is to see Joe Jusko and get a sketch from him. In that I was successful. He draws females so well I asked him to sketch Wonder Woman for me, but looking at the Spider-man sketches he did for other people afterwards I started to think maybe I should have asked for Spidey… Meh, I’m just happy I got something and that I got to meet him. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that “Sydney artist” David Yardin is an artist who’s work I recognise and really like. I didn’t recognise his name when I first saw it on the Supanova website, so when I saw the “Sydney artist” bit in front of his name I immediately discounted him. But when I got to the con and saw some of the posters he had up, and his portfolio, I was flabbergasted. “THATs him?” The guy is one of my favourite storm artist. He does a mean Spidey too (just for fun tho, I don’t think he’s actually done any official Spidey work). I picked up a gorgeous Spidey print from him (one of his “just for fun” pieces) and asked him to do a Storm sketch for me. Unfortunately he didn’t actually get around to my Storm piece by the end of the day (the man puts so much detail into his pieces that he only manages to get 5 to 7 done in a day), so he did a very quick Storm headshot for me for free, and offered me an Iceman sketch, that someone else asked for and never picked up, for a reduced price. “Iceman!? Do I want an Iceman sketch?! He’s only my favourite damn X-Man. Heeell yes, I’ll buy it off you for $50.” So all in all I came away pretty happy (and much the poorer).

It started off with the SCISSA end of semester party last night. It should have been fun, considering the number of people Jad and I knew who were attending. It was certainly enjoyable last year, but boy was it a colossal bore this year. How can a party with about 10 different DJs taking turns spinning their beats be quite so boring I’ve no idea. They were too loud for people to comfortably converse so everyone, other than a small group of somewhat drunk girls, was giving the DJ platform a wide berth. And the spiked punch… I don’t know what it was “spiked” with but there certainly was a minimal amount of alcohol in it. They had some fairly good quality (or so people tell me) beer going. Too bad I don’t touch the stuff.

I watched Iron man last night. It was mildly entertaining; the dialogue was funny and Iron Man himself looked pretty cool. Somehow though, Downey felt/looked very out of place throughout the movie. I just could not come to terms with the idea of Robert Downey Jr as a star in an action movie. It was too weird. Other than that, well, the plot was horrendously predictable and well, pretty stupid at points.

Well, not quite, but close enough. While drilling for borate in Serbia, mining giant Rio Tinto discovered a new mineral. When they couldn’t identify the white, powdery rock, they did what everyone else does these days and turned to Google. And what did good ole Google tell them? That the closest representation of the chemical formula of this element is found in the description of Kryptonite in Superman Returns. Flourine and Krypton are the only two differing elements between the two minerals. The chemical formula of Jadarite, as this new mineral will now be known (so named after the Jadar Basin, where it was found), is sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide. Although the two minerals are not perfectly identical, the similarity between their chemical composition is quite a note-worthy coincidence, or at least I think so. Its kinda cool and somehow a little freaky too.
