I Wish I Was A Prawn Cracker

Prawn Cracker

I was listening to my car radio on the way in to work when the DJs introduced “I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker” by Sandi Thom. The way one of them (there were 3 DJs hosting the show) pronounced the title, it sounded like he said “I wish I was a Prawn Cracker” instead. So that got me mentally changing the song as it played. Here’s what I came up with, along with a few bit I added as I was typing it out.

Poetry Thursday #1: Riced

Haven’t written a poem in I don’t know how long. This one was inspired by Jad in a way. He was driving my car and said something like “All riced up with no power to go. That should be a song about your car”. Well, I don’t do songs but I sorta can do poems.

Ando The Comedic Commando

I’m exhausted. Went canoeing for the first time yesterday. Jad, a few of our friends and I rented 3 2-person canoes and went paddling up the Canning river. Jad nicknamed us “team safety yellow” coz we got the yellow canoe. The other 2 were “team speed red” (coz “red goes faster”. although I think “team endurance red” might have been better) and “team traffic hazard blue”. The guys (Ron and leemur) in the blue canoe were given that moniker because they could never seam to steer straight and often got caught in trees growing out of the water and stuff. Unfortunately we overdid it a bit and went too far upstream. By the time we got back we could barely paddle anymore. Halfway back I renamed our team “team lactic acid”. It was fun but exhausting and combined with all the manual labour I did in the glasshouses at work today, I haven’t quite recovered yet. I wish I’d had my camera with me to take pictures of the cormorant nests and stuff that we saw. But, never having been before, I didn’t know what to expect, so I left it at home because I didn’t want to risk the camera taking a dip in the river or getting stolen out of my car.

David Suzuki and the “destruction” of our planet.

I love this guy. One of my colleagues likes to tune the lab radio into Triple J. I’m not a big fan of the music they play, or most of their DJs but occasionally they have some interesting things, like Dr. Karl’s sciencey phone-in segment (Dr. Karl and the hosting DJ talk about some general science-related topics on their minds and then listeners get to phone in with questions of their own). Yesterday he had Dr. David Suzuki guest commenting with him. David Suzuki (yet another Canadian I like) is a big proponent of environmental reform and issues like that. Unlike the usual crazy extremists tho, he is a real scientist trying to find real solutions.

Thursday 13 #4: Stand Up Comics

Thursday 13 header

I love stand-up comedy and Australia has some great comics. However, not many of them tend to have performances in my part of Oz, and when they do tickets are usually pretty expensive. So when Jad and I found out that Wil Anderson would be performing here this weekend, he looked at me and said something to the equivalent of “I’d take you if I could but the tickets are probably around $60 and I can’t afford it, especially after the camera”. So when I got into work today I looked it up, found out that the tickets are only $34, bought a couple of tickets and hopefully he’ll be pleasantly surprised when I tell him about it after work today. In honour of that, here are 13 of my favourite stand-up comedians, in no particular order:
