Supanova Perth 2008

Supanova was a lot more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I even caved in and bought a bunch of comics; mainly very early Uncanny X-Men issues (numbering in the teens, twenties and thirties), so they’re in bad condition, but they were verging on affordable at least. Also picked up a few World’s Finest issues. The main reason I went tho is to see Joe Jusko and get a sketch from him. In that I was successful. He draws females so well I asked him to sketch Wonder Woman for me, but looking at the Spider-man sketches he did for other people afterwards I started to think maybe I should have asked for Spidey… Meh, I’m just happy I got something and that I got to meet him. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that “Sydney artist” David Yardin is an artist who’s work I recognise and really like. I didn’t recognise his name when I first saw it on the Supanova website, so when I saw the “Sydney artist” bit in front of his name I immediately discounted him. But when I got to the con and saw some of the posters he had up, and his portfolio, I was flabbergasted. “THATs him?” The guy is one of my favourite storm artist. He does a mean Spidey too (just for fun tho, I don’t think he’s actually done any official Spidey work). I picked up a gorgeous Spidey print from him (one of his “just for fun” pieces) and asked him to do a Storm sketch for me. Unfortunately he didn’t actually get around to my Storm piece by the end of the day (the man puts so much detail into his pieces that he only manages to get 5 to 7 done in a day), so he did a very quick Storm headshot for me for free, and offered me an Iceman sketch, that someone else asked for and never picked up, for a reduced price. “Iceman!? Do I want an Iceman sketch?! He’s only my favourite damn X-Man. Heeell yes, I’ll buy it off you for $50.” So all in all I came away pretty happy (and much the poorer).

Busy Weekend

It started off with the SCISSA end of semester party last night. It should have been fun, considering the number of people Jad and I knew who were attending. It was certainly enjoyable last year, but boy was it a colossal bore this year. How can a party with about 10 different DJs taking turns spinning their beats be quite so boring I’ve no idea. They were too loud for people to comfortably converse so everyone, other than a small group of somewhat drunk girls, was giving the DJ platform a wide berth. And the spiked punch… I don’t know what it was “spiked” with but there certainly was a minimal amount of alcohol in it. They had some fairly good quality (or so people tell me) beer going. Too bad I don’t touch the stuff.

Quick Movie Review: Mongol

I watched Mongol on Friday with a couple of friends. Considering the fact that the last movie I watched was The Happening, my standards might have been somewhat lowered, but I thought that Mongol was a pretty good movie. The original language it was made in is Mongolian but they didn’t dub it, thankfully; the whole thing was subtitled. Usually I dislike watching subtitled movies (only slightly less than I dislike dubbed movies). The way I see it, if I’m going to read I might as well get a book. But as you might be able to guess, this movie wasn’t really heavy on the conversation, so the subtitles didn’t really distract you from much and they weren’t so long that you couldn’t finish reading them before they disappeared. It really was an altogether alright movie. I can’t think of anything outstandingly bad or anything outstandingly good about it. It could’ve been just a bit shorter but thats my only real complaint. Mongol most definitely gives you a very different (much more humanised) view of good ‘ole Genghis Khan. From all accounts they’ve used historian/scholarly best guesses in writing the movie too, so I guess its about as accurate as a movie about a figure from that far back in history can get (if that kind of thing matters to you). I liked it. I’d definitely recommend Mongol to anyone looking for something to watch.

Movie Review: The Happening

A bunch of us wanted to go watch a movie last night. We debated between Narnia (not too many votes there), Hulk and The happening, until Jad saw Mark Wahlberg’s name and decided on The Happening for us. That was two hours of my life and $10 of my hard earned cash that I’ll never get back. The next time Jad chooses a movie, remind me NOT to watch it. He’s got dismal luck when it comes to picking movies.

My second politics-related post in a row

God-damn hypocritical bastards that live in this state with me. The government asks us to vote on whether we want the shops open for Sunday trading and the “no” vote wins by a landslide. Then the shops are open for trading on a Sunday (for fundraising or around Christmas time) and everyone rushes to the shops in droves. I visited mum yesterday and she lives just behind one of those shopping centers that ocasionally opens on Sunday for Telethon fundraising. It took us 10 minutes to drive about 2 kilometers up the road to her house because of all the cars lining up to get into the shopping center. The shopping center car park was so full there were cars parked on the verges and down the side streets around the shopping center. Where were all these bastards when the vote was called for? What are they doing at the shops on a Sunday when they claimed to not want Sunday trading? Lying bastards. The next time this issue comes up for a vote they should just open the shopping centers on a Sunday, and anyone that walks through the doors puts in an automatic “yes” vote. Damn stodgy, backwater state. They just resist anything that has to do with change. If it’s a different way of doing things from the way we’ve done it in the past, it’s gotta be bad apparently. Stupidity.
